Best Advocate, Student Trial Lawyers Association, 2014
Robert Zahradnik-Mitchell joined BAM as a law clerk in early 2016. As a third year law student with University of Denver Sturm College of Law, Robert is applying his legal knowledge to real cases in preparation for his transition from student to lawyer. His experience travelling across Florida and the United States with his Speech & Debate team helped to prepare him for his highly successful participation with the Denver Sturm College of Law’s National Trial Team, which was just ranked 6th in the nation by US News Reports. .
While working to achieve his Bachelor’s Degree in Legal Studies from the University of Central Florida, Robert also worked at Newsome Melton Law Firm helping the victims of defective products receive justice. While there, Robert tracked client damages, helped to draft pleadings and discovery, and assisted in the investigation of accident scenes. While working towards his Juris Doctorate at DU, Robert spent his first law school summer working with the Adams County Public Defender’s Office. While there, he worked on significant and challenging cases, including a case on which he wrote an appeal, and others for which he drafted motions for reconsideration and to suppress evidence on behalf of the Office’s clients.
Robert has also worked with the Judge Advocate General’s office helping Airmen with their legal issues at both Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, and at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Every week Robert participated in legal assistance helping Service members and their families. Robert researched a wide variety of legal issues on behalf of Airmen ranging from determining spousal maintenance, landlord-tenant issues, and protecting the rights of Airmen under the Servicemember’s Civil Relief Act. Robert also helped Judge Advocate Generals prepare for a court-martial involving the sexual assault of a child.
Trial advocacy has continued to play a significant role in Robert’s law school experience. He won Best Advocate as a first year law student as a member of the Student Trial Lawyers Association. He was a member of the Trial Practicum as a second year law student, through which he learned how to litigate a case in both civil and criminal contexts. In addition to participating as a member of the highly-ranked University of Denver Sturm College of Law’s National Trial Team, Robert also serves as an Assistant Coach of the University of Denver’s Undergraduate Mock Trial Team.
